Employment-based Routes Unit

This site provides information about the EBR unit programmes, and access to programme communities.

The Employment-based Routes Unit offers a range of vocational routes for people wishing to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

We offer two programmes:

  • The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is for graduates who want to continue working in a school while they train as a teacher. You will be employed by a school as an unqualified teacher and trained 'on the job' to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Places on the GTP are competitive and are offered to candidates who meet our criteria relating to suitability for teaching, quality of degree and teaching experience. Your school should also meet our requirements for training people on the GTP.

We are currently accepting applications for entry into September 2010. The deadline for applications is Friday, 26th March. Interviews are planned for Friday 21st May and the week beginning Monday, 24th May. Due to an increasing number of applications we receive for the GTP, we are unable to provide feedback for rejected applicants.

The Teaching & Development Agency (TDA) fund a limited number of places on the GTP. Therefore, competition for these is very strong. There are two types of grants: a salary and training grant, and a training only grant. The value of the salary grant is dependent on where the employing school is located: £18,200 for inner-London; £17,150 for outer-London; £15,400 for ‘fringe’ areas and £14,500 for ‘national’ schools. Please contact the TDA to determine which category your school falls under. The training grant for September 2010 will be £1,200.

Independent schools are only eligible for a self-funded place, which means that they receive no funding from the TDA towards your salary and training, and incur the fee of the programme, which will be £4,500 for the year’s training, invoiced pro-rata on a termly basis. Strong candidates from State schools who are not offered a funded place are usually offered a self-funded place.

Please see below for an application form.

  • The Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP) caters for people from outside the EU who have a teaching qualification from their own country and want to gain QTS in England.

Please see below for an application form.

In order to be considered for a place on our Programmes you will need to be employed by a school. Advice on finding a school can be downloaded below.
